The Fulfilled Word Makes You Certain                                                  John 14:28-29

3/29/2017

(from our midweek Lenten series)

You might remember me sharing with you a few years ago how my daughter, Clara, used to think I was leaving her. I am not talking about the times when she knows that I must go to the office and prepare

sermons and Bible classes. Nor am I talking about the times I leave to visit fellow members at their homes. No, when I would put her down for bedtime, say good-night, and shut the door, she thought I was leaving her. Tears streamed down her face. Her face grew flush and she got hysterical. She would even stand up in her crib and try to climb out of it just to be with me.
Just because I am not physically in the room with her does not mean that I left her.

“Americans are sick of a process that is failing”— or so, that was the recent opinion of a news commentator. Whether or not you agree with that sentiment, you can understand the point he makes.

(from our mid-week Lenten series)
His gun levels right at her tiny body. Fear paralyzes her father. Police swarm the perimeter. Every glassy surface reflects red and blue flashing lights. Yet, each additional squad car makes the robber only more agitated. Both father— a proud, middle-aged man— and his two-month-old daughter stand hostage in their own house. Not able to freely enter and leave. Not guaranteed to have another birthday, let alone another “tomorrow.” Not certain how long that gun will threaten life.

Can I propose a challenge for you? Do you want to be tested? What I would do is close the back doors of our worship space. I would hang light-blocking curtains on every window in this sanctuary. Block out all traces of light. Make it absolutely pitch-black— so dark that you can feel it, so dark that you cannot see the hand in front of your face.

(from our mid-week Lenten series)
Sheer terror fills her eyes. Tears stream down her cheeks. Her little mouth lets out fearful sobs. She does not want to be here; she does not want this. Her little hands reach for your loving embrace— for you to snatch her away to safety. You do not, but you still remain right beside her. Her terrified eyes frantically search for your rescue, but your eyes reflect loving care. Then she sees it— the worst heading right at her.

All she wants is water. That is all this woman came to Jacob’s well to get. To throw her bucket down a 90 foot deep well, to hoist it back up brimming with water, and then to haul it back home under the sweltering noontime sun. That is all she wants. Then she would be satisfied— or so she thought.

(from our mid-week Lenten series)
Good guy chases bad guy— climbing stairwells, sprinting down hallways, dashing around corners, kicking open door after door until... he finally corners him. Gun drawn and aimed directly at the heart of a man who killed an agent. Finger on the trigger because this man shot at him. Bullet in the chamber because this man committed countless crimes.
The two stare each other down— until the cornered man, in one last bout of desperation, darts to flee. A muscle flinches. A finger presses the trigger. The hammer strikes. The bullet shoots from the barrel. A criminal slumps to the ground.
Whether you are watching James Bond take down a super-villain or your favorite television crime show, you see a tense scene like this and the first thought that floods your mind is?… “He got what he deserved!” If someone breaks the law, then consequences follow.
