Our congregation...
St. John Lutheran Church was formed in 1882. A group of Lutherans had settled in southern Clare, clearing land to farm. No Lutheran church served the area, so these settlers gathered to hear God's Word preached in sermons, read the Bible, and sing hymns. In 1888, the congregation built their first house of worship, thereby establishing a place to share God's Word with all people throughout every age.
The congregation has experienced many changes over 135 years, but the congregation's ministry goal has remained the same:
The congregation has experienced many changes over 135 years, but the congregation's ministry goal has remained the same:
We are Built on Christ, We Build on Christ.
- We hear Jesus Christ preached
- We grow in our knowledge and trust of Jesus Christ by using the Word of God and his Sacraments
- We bring others to Jesus Christ by using the Word of God and his Sacraments
St. John Lutheran Church also possesses the unique privilege of joining Faith Lutheran Church (located in nearby Harrison) as part of a "dual-parish." This means that one pastor serves both congregations. Each congregation has its own service time in its own building, but together they work together to carry out a common ministry.
Our church body...St. John Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). As part of this church body St. John is able to participate in opportunities that many congregations cannot accomplish on their own. By working together with over 1,200 like-minded churches, St. John is able to support missionaries throughout the world. They join others in maintaining an education system. They ensure Bible teachings are accurately shared through literature and practice.
